Nelson L. Adams, III, M.D., of Miami,
Florida, was installed as the 108th President of the NMA at the 2007 Annual Convention. Dr.
Adams served as president of the local and state NMA societies in Florida and as Vice
President, Secretary of the House of Delegates, and member of the Board of Trustees of the
NMA. He is currently chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jackson
North Medical Center, president of N.L. Adams, M.D. and Associates, and president and
chairman of Access Health Solutions (AHS), a managed care company.

Dr. Rudolph Moise, an NMA member and Vice President of Business
Development of Access Health Solutions of Sunrise, Florida, and Mrs. Moise presented
Dr. Adams, President of the NMA, and Mrs. Adams with a $25,000 donation to the
association. The check was presented at the President's reception following Dr. Adams'
installation at the annual meeting in Hawaii. Dr. Moise said, "I attended an NMA
meeting which energized me to begin a business that would help other physicians at
a time when they were being marginalized, and I am happy to give back to an
organization that has given so much to physicians of color."

The NMA, funded by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, is conducting an HIV Testing and Prevention Project. Drs. Virginia
Caine and Wilbert Jordan, Project Principal Investigators, welcome member
participation. Your feedback will help NMA better understand the needs of its members
working in HIV care, treatment and prevention. The term "HIV
prevention," used throughout the assessment includes the following activities: HIV
health education, HIV risk reduction counseling, and HIV testing. Names are requested
to avoid duplication of entries, but surveys are confidential. Thank you for your
participation in this critical effort!

Sixty-one percent of adults are overweight or obese, putting
them at risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and depression. The NMA
Diabetes Education Program is addressing weight loss methods and conditions associated with
obesity, including diabetes.

NMA has collaborated with the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), to offer
the 2007 Clinical Vaccinology Course. The course is co-sponsored by the Emory
Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and by the Emory Vaccine Center and

A recent study appearing in the September/October issue of Public
Health Reports describes the racial disparity found in the number of billboards advertising
tobacco products. Researchers have found that the number of tobacco-related billboards
are twice as high in black neighborhoods as in white. Researchers found there were 4.5
tobacco billboards per 10,000 residents in white areas and 11.8 per 10,000, or 2.6 times
the density, in black neighborhoods. A description of the study can be found in the New
