NMA CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Continuing Medical Education program of the National Medical Association is to contribute toward the professional development of practicing physicians, academicians, researchers, basic scientists, residents, fellows, students and other health professionals in primary, secondary and tertiary health care for this target audience. Participants include medical professionals from throughout the United States and other countries in all health specialties.
Professional development activities are designed to promote: physician performance, competency, knowledge and improved patient outcomes. These are provided during annual medical specialty section, regional, and state and local society meetings with lectures, panels, workshops, small group discussions, hands-on exercises, audio-visual, and electronic media and a monthly peer-reviewed journal. Topics related to the practice of medicine, socioeconomic factors and health disparities are presented as deemed needed by health care providers. Assessment of knowledge gaps and effectiveness of education activity will be done.
Content will be presented, in support of performance, competency and improved patient outcome, as represented in standard textbooks of medicine and in the curriculum of United States university medical centers. Reports of topics and systems designed to correct health care disparities are emphasized. Throughout its history, the National Medical Association has focused, primarily on the improvement of healthcare for African Americans and other underserved populations. However, its principles, goals, initiatives and philosophy encompass all sectors of the population and contribute to optimal healthcare for all.
